Mehroo Kotval is absolutely correct in saying that today the Cdr Kawas Nanavati (pictured) case is presented like "an inter community fracas” ("Villain or victim?” Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, August 21, 2017). I have written on this subject earlier but wish to once again stress the fact that it certainly did not seem so.
My friends and I from Law College used to attend the court hearings. Not once did we find an exchange of words between the two communities in court or in college where we also had Sindhi students.
The dispute and arguments centered around Nanavati’s punishment! Half felt he should be let off — in fact, Nanavati should have shot his wife as well! The other half said this was cold-blooded murder and he should certainly be punished. Both sides of this argument were taken up by students of different communities.
If there was a communal dispute, we would surely have heard our parents or elders speak of it. It is only recently that I have read about communal discord between the Sindhis and Parsis. God knows who started this rumor!
