In order to publish more current Milestones information Parsiana will carry the names of the deceased from the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) website bpppaidust.in and of those cremated and/or whose funerary ceremonies were performed at the new Worli Prayer Hall. The names of those cremated are sent to us by Prayer Hall coordinator Ervad Framroze Mirza, by e-mail.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 20 and 48 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 31 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 51 years, averaging at 33 years.

Fifty-three Zoroastrians opted to be consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence while only five births were reported. Various diseases of the heart claimed 16 victims (eight were in the above 80 age category). Lung disease and pneumonia felled eight, while cancer took the lives of six. Four deaths were attributed to general debility/old age, three each to multi organ failure and brain disease and two each to urosepsis, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), diabetes and kidney failure. Septicemia, Parkinson’s disease, septic shock, haematemesis (vomiting of blood) and anemia were isolated causes of deaths. In the case of one death, the coroner’s report was pending. A female centenarian was the eldest to breathe her last, while the youngest was also a female of 44 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for December 2016 in Bombay was 79 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by one hospital — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased alongwith their ages, addresses and causes of deaths are forwarded to Parsiana by the BPP. The trust however notes that the information has not been verified or authenticated by them. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
