Forts in Maharashtra have Portuguese, British, Muslim and Maratha origins

While the Portuguese built many coastal and inland forts during their occupation of India, they ultimately fell to other powers like the English and the Marathas. Many of the forts lacked sufficient Portuguese commanders and troops. A large number of the Portuguese administrators were more inclined towards private trade – many were advisors to the sultans of Gujarat. Also, Brazil, with its mineral riches, became more important to Portuguese.
