“Lineup of legends”

The ongoing series on the Parsis employed with the railways, starting with "Lineup of legends” (Parsiana, October 21-November 6, 2020), has been a pleasing one to follow for those of us who can trace our family histories in the bells and whistles (quite literally so) of those magnificently long mechanical chariots. The pieces must have been particularly appealing for so many families whose entire generations owe their delightful memories to the romance of the railways. We had the benefit of growing up in Bulsar, a small town with a rather disproportionate importance for the Western Railway (WR), erstwhile Bombay, Baroda and......

The same thing happened to the Flying Ranee! It was a super fast train between Surat and Bombay Central stopping at only Navsari and Billimora. It was meant for commuters who were working in offices in Mumbai but lived in Surat and Navsari. I remember the famous steam engine that used to haul the "Flying" as the locals called the train. But protests and demands as outlined above and the political pressure that was brought to ber on the railways, made the flying Ranee in to a Crawling Princess!

My father and I would travel regularly by first class to Navsari. On the return I would go to Bombay Central in our Chevrolet to pick him up and bring him home to DPC.
