Former Ambassador Jamsheed K. A. Marker’s (pictured) demise is not only a loss for his family and friends but all of Pakistan. The country has lost its noblest citizen who served the nascent nation with unflinching dedication and the finest form of diplomacy. He bore extremely positive results for the country ("An astute ambassador,” In Memoriam, Parsiana, August 7, 2018).
His efforts to project Pakistan as a modern and progressive Muslim state will never be forgotten. He was a friend to all but his love was directed towards serving the country. Pakistan was indeed fortunate to have such a knowledgeable, cultured and sophisticated diplomat who faced difficult and sensitive times. He was undoubtedly a feather in the cap of the Parsi community of Pakistan and the Foreign Service.
A businessman by family tradition, he proved to be an icon and beacon of light. Though not from the Foreign Service but a political appointee, Marker left an indelible mark in the annals of Pakistan’s foreign policy. The books he authored will always remain guiding lights for those who follow in the Foreign Service and those in the policy making corridors of this country.
One of the finest cricket commentators, his iconic voice can still be remembered by those who had the privilege to enjoy his style. I had the honor of meeting him a few months back when he looked very frail. Soft-spoken and well mannered, he was a true gentleman with a natural smile on his face and glee in his eyes.
