Sophisticated simplicity

As part of the 35th anniversary celebrations of Cymroza Art Gallery, owner Pheroza Godrej put up a different kind of exhibition, "A work of art — A work on paper.” Invited to participate were 41 top contemporary artists. "Each of the works on display has been aesthetically conceptualized and strikingly portray, in depth, the stories these distinguished contributing artists were inspired to tell,” revealed Godrej (The Afternoon Dispatch and Courier, October 9, 2006).

Pheroza Godrej: innovations in art

Explaining her choice of using paper as the surface as "by no means inverted snobbery” Godrej prefers to call it "sophisticated simplicity or simple sophistication. Simple because of the easy availability of paper and sophisticated because each of the contributors to the exhibition has, over the years, produced works eminently worthy of the high acclaim that has been bestowed on them. Paper-making technology has advanced by leaps and bounds and fine art paper, a source of pride and prestige of both the artist and the paper-maker is available in various qualities, textures and thicknesses.”
This exhibition marks a new stage in the evolution of Cymroza Art Gallery, known for having played a crucial role in the spiraling growth of Indian art, identifying and nurturing many painters, lithographers, ceramic artists and photographers, many of whom have achieved international recognition and a high standard of excellence.
