Intercommunity as well as civil marriages among Parsis registered at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at Khar for the period January to March 2015 are published in this issue. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted from the listing.
The marriage officer at the OCH registered 16 interfaith unions and two community marriages. The Khar registers recorded nine intercommunity marriages.
Names of those opting for cremation also find a mention here. A scanning of the registers at the Chandanwadi electric crematorium showed nine Zoroastrians were cremated during the three-month period.
Besides the above data also featured here are births, marriages and deaths that have occurred in the last 15 days of March 2015.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 30 and 33 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides being 32 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 32 and 34 years, averaging at 33 years.
As usual the major cause of deaths was heart disease that claimed the lives of nine Zoroastrians — five of them had crossed the 80-year-old mark. While five patients succumbed to pneumonia/lung disease, two fell prey to cancer. Isolated causes of deaths were enterocolitis (inflammation of the small intestine and colon), liver disease, old age/general debility, kidney failure, hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by the deficiency of thyroid secretion), hypertension and septicemia. A 36-year-old male was the youngest to breathe his last versus the oldest: a 98-year-old female. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the second fortnight of March in Bombay, was 77 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
