Interfaith unions solemnized between January to March 2019 are featured in this issue. However, those names of intermarried Parsis that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been omitted from the list.
The interfaith marriages at the Old Customs House (OCH) numbered 18 and at Khar, numbered 12. Two Parsi couples opted for a civil marriage (registered at OCH).
Parsiana sources information for the Milestones column from various anjumans, hospitals, individuals, newsletters and publications. While much of the material is sketchy, the Bombay marriages and death lists are quite exhaustive.
Data on marriages within the community in Bombay is culled four times in a year from the office of the Registrar of Marriages at the Bombay High Court and on interfaith unions from the Registrar of Marriages offices at Fort and Khar. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony.
The list of the deceased and causes of deaths for those consigned to the Doongerwadi in Bombay is provided by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet with a disclaimer that the information has not been verified or authenticated by them. The Worli Prayer Hall sends Parsiana names of those cremated there.
A few names of those deceased in end March 2019 find mention here as well as those who passed away till April 10.
In the break-up of Bombay Doongerwadi deaths, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
Causes of deaths for March 2019: Fifteen of the 26 Zoroastrians whose causes of deaths were due to diseases of the heart were octogenarians and nonagenarians. The other causes of deaths were: septic shock (four), pneumonia/lung disease, brain disease and cancer (three each) and Parkinson’s disease and septicemia (two each). Urinary tract infection, liver disease, osteoporosis, anemia, diabetes, gastro-intestinal bleed, general debility/old age, arteriosclerosis (hardening, narrowing or loss of elasticity of the arteries or blood vessels) and multi organ failure were cited as isolated causes of deaths. A 11-year-old girl — the youngest to breathe her last — was an unfortunate victim of a road accident. The eldest to die was a 96-year-old female. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for March 2019 in Bombay was 79 years.

Data on births in Bombay is made available by the Breach Candy Hospital. Births in other hospitals and private nursing homes are included when an individual sends us information together with a copy of the birth certificate.
