"After 20 years of publication the Gavashni board decided that the paper needed a facelift...We engaged plastic surgeons to handle the job...After a few trips to the surgery we finally settled on the product which you now see...Now that we have chosen a new face, we hope that subsequent issues will be out more frequently,” notes an editorial in Calcutta Gavashni, July-September 2004. The quarterly newsletter from the Calcutta Zoroastrian Community’s Religious and Charity Fund (CZCR&CF) has opted for color printing on art paper for its 12-page format. Considering that this issue reached the readers only in January 2005 and seeking member feedback urgently the editorial board urges, "Please do inform us quickly so that we do not have an excuse for delaying the next issue.”
New face for Calcutta Gavashni
As a result of the revamp the presence of the governor of West Bengal Viren Shah at the Navroz dinner in 2004, the comedy presented by The Calcutta Parsi Amateur Dramatic Club, the winning ladies basketball team of the Calcutta Parsee Club, and their regular news items are now featured in color. Letters to the Editor now become more readable; and the Children’s Corner has attempted to ignite the interest of young Zoroastrians. Recipes too take on a new appeal especially when chocolate ice cream is seen in color! The activities of The Saklat Physical Culture Institute and The Parsi Zoroastrian Association, and the progress of D. B. Mehta Atash Adaran earn coverage too.
From the Calcutta Gavashni we learn that the CZCR&CF is in the process of bringing out a new directory, the last being out in 2002. The Calcutta Dharamshala is sought to be relocated for which the trustees summoned a special meeting attended by 198 people of whom 181 supported the move to sell the two properties on 9 and 10 Bow Street and from the proceeds purchase new premises to house the Dharamshala.
