Scribe and style

Died: Gulshan Guy Ewing (pictured pg 134), 92, editor of Eve’s Weekly and Star and Style, one-time popular Bombay publications that have since ceased publication; on April 18, 2020 at a care home in Richmond, London of Covid-19.
"Gulshan had a glittering career as a society journalist for the most popular women’s magazines in India,” remarked Malcolm Deboo, president of the Zoroastrian Trust Funds of Europe, intimating the community of her demise and sharing links to the media coverage she had received.
"For me, Gulshan Ewing will always be the ultimate editor who had elegance, style, grace and above all a personality, which was not only friendly, warm and memorable but also unforgettable,” appreciated fashion writer and former Miss India Meher Castelino on the website mxmindia.com (media, marketing, more). "Cigarette attached to a long stylish filter in one hand, clad in beautiful, printed, chiffon saris, elegantly styled décolleté cholis and perfectly coiffured hair, Gulshan would float into a room enveloped in the most exotic perfume. She was the ultimate style Diva of the days and in a coterie of male editors she was a breath of fresh air… Gulshan had a knack of spotting talent. Whether it was a model or a writer, she knew who had what it takes to succeed. Many young journalists who are seasoned writers and editors today owe their careers to Gulshan,” added Castelino.
According to Lakshmi Narayan who succeeded Ewing as editor of Eve’s Weekly, her mentor gave "scores of young people a chance to express themselves. She guided them through the mind fields of active journalism, taught us when to go all out and when to rein ourselves in; all the while keeping a strict eye on the English used by us and the facts we were peddling.”
Known to be on first-name terms with leading actors and politicians of her time, she had interacted with some of the most iconic celebrities from around the world.
"In the past week, news websites have published her photographs interviewing Hollywood legends Gregory Peck, Cary Grant and Roger Moore; she’s seen dining with Alfred Hitchcock, chatting with Prince Charles, posing for photographs with Ava Gardner and teaching Danny Kaye how to drape a sari,” reported BBC News on May 1. Photographs also showed her with yesteryear Bollywood stars Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan…
Editor-in-chief and president of Glad Rags, Maureen Wadia described Ewing as "a woman to reckon with in those days. They don’t make that many memorable women like her.”
After retirement, Ewing had moved to London with her British husband Guy Ewing who died in 2018. She is survived by her children Anjali and Roy.          P. G.
