Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the latter half of January 2011 are carried in this issue.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 23 and 35 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 37 years, averaging at 30 years.
Births cut a sorry figure with only three at the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 41. Ten patients succumbed to diseases of the heart (seven of whom were octogenarians and nonagenarians). Lung disease/pneumonia took the lives of six victims, whereas cancer claimed four. Three Zoroastrians each fell prey to liver disease and septicemia and two each to hypertension and Parkin-son’s disease. The 11 isolated cases include: arthritis, brain disease, injuries to vital organs, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), old age/general debility, urinary tract infection, leukemia (a blood disease in which the white cells are abnormal in type or number), haema-toma (a swelling filled with blood), Alzheimer’s disease, de-mentia (deterioration of mental facilities) and diabetes. The age range fluctuated between 57 and 99 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the second fortnight of January, in Bombay, was 80 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
