Cars and competition

.Tata Motors Limited (TM) launched its new electric vehicle (EV) version of its Harrier sports utility vehicle (SUV) on June 3, 2025. Though TM was the first car-maker in the country to manufacture EVs, in recent times it has been facing competition from others like Morris Garages Motor India, Mahindra and Mahindra and Hyundai because of which its EV market share slumped, reported the financial newspapers on the following day.

However, TM director Sailesh Chandra was sanguine that the company’s key strength is in its strategy to have a presence in each price point, reported Mint. "The right way to look at the market is to divide it into three segments based on pricing. Through our launches this year we will have two cars each in the entry segment (priced below Rs 12 lakhs), mid segment (priced between Rs 12 and 20 lakhs) and the high segment (priced at Rs 20 lakhs and over)… We will go even further with more launches in the upcoming years,” Chandra told the newspaper.
To Business Standard Chandra said that "the SUV segment has grown over the years to now command 55% of that market, and within this the high SUV segment accounts for around 25,000 units a month.”
"Ranking isn’t important, but the direction is. Different companies are at different stages of their product lifecycle. Our focus is on long term strategy,” the director informed Financial Express (FE).
Yet another TM vehicle, Altross, was described by FE of May 31 as a premium hatchback, with more cabin space than most compact SUVs, providing a better ride and handling and better value for money. It is also the only diesel hatchback in India though it is available in petrol and CNG variants as well.                 S.V.
