The practice of initiating incomplete navars should be stopped. A navar should be properly ordained as per traditions and as per the writings of his teacher Ervad Rattanshaw Rustomji Motafaram who in 1980 authored several book on Zoroastrian religion and history, emphasizes Ervad Nairyosang Turel whose son Pourushasp was initiated as a full-fledged na-var on June 1, 2004 at Surat’s Modi Atash Behram. The navar ceremony was performed by Ervad Harvesp Aspi Sanjana and Ervad Nairyosang Jamshedji Turel under the guidance of Ervad Faredun Jamshedji Turel.
Pourushasp Turel: adding luster
Seeing the 11-year-old Pourushasp pray for more than three hours for four days on the "Edhora,” community members were happy. Many had come all the way from Bombay, particularly Hoshang Bengali who financed the Moti Homayesh in 2003.
Ervad Pourushasp studied at the Dadar Athornan Boarding Madressa for five years and was guided by his father during the last one year. Pourushasp hails from the Turel family associated with Surat’s Goti Adarian. It is hoped that in future Pourushasp would be fortunate to perform the higher liturgical ceremonies and add luster to the Turel family which is well known for performing Pav mahal ceremonies.
In 2003 the Moti Homayesh was performed at the Modi Atash Behram by Nairyosang with the able assistance and guidance of Faredun when 144 baj, afringan, ijashni, vendidad were performed at a stretch for about one and half months. Nairyosang is now serving as a boiwalla at the H. B. Wadia Atas Bahram.
