Due to the courts being closed for the summer holidays, Parsiana could not access the names of the couples who tied the knot for this period. The same will be published in a forthcoming issue.
An alarming divide was noticeable in the birth (two, both girls) and death (27) figures between May 1-15. While seven Zoroastrians fell prey to diseases of the heart (six being over 80 years of age), diabetes and septicemia claimed three each. Old age/general debility, cancer, Parkinson’s disease and pneumonia/lung disease took the lives of two patients each. Isolated causes of death were listed as: polytrauma, asthma, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease, multi organ failure, urosepsis, cellulitis and leukemia. The highest and lowest ages at death were 98 and 52 respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of May in Bombay, was 78 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
