After battling for his life on a ventilator for three days, noted orthopedic surgeon Dr Kaikhushroo (Keku) Kavarana (76) passed away on June 25, 2017. He suffered severe asphyxia as a result of a fire in the air conditioning duct of their Malabar Hill apartment 
on June 22. The doctor and his interior decorator wife Feroza (68) were pulled out of the smoke filled 2,000 sq ft flat within half an hour of the incident, reported the MumbaiMirror of June 23. Their pet dog perished in the blaze.
Brought to the Breach Candy Hospital "in a critical condition,” the couple was treated by Dr Farokh Udwadia. Kaikhushroo had suffered "extensive injuries to his lungs due to suffocation, which resulted in oxygen deprivation to the brain,” a senior administrative officer of the Hospital was quoted. Chief fire officer P. S. Rahangdale told MM that the accident was the result of a short circuit, "or probably a fault in the air conditioning.”
The fire broke out at 4 a.m. in the ground floor flat that the doctor also used as a dispensary. Policemen in the police station just opposite their building Dilkhush noticed the flames, The Times of India (TOI) reported on June 23. Feroza was carried out by PSI (police sub inspector) Pradeep Devkar. The firemen who reached the spot were able to enter through the back door, only to find the doctor unconscious in the kitchen, and the pet dog dead in a bathroom. The couple’s son Kairus and daughter-in-law Sunaina who resided with them were able to escape the blaze.
