In spite of unethical practices during previous elections, the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) trustees have found no time to frame a code of conduct for this election.
On a mere technical issue, a drama was created in the boardroom over Muncherji Cama’s resignation. Money meant for the poor and the needy has gone to attorneys. Earlier also, crores of trust funds were diverted to file meaningless litigation that brought no benefits but tarnished the image of the community that only wants peace. A good trustee is a peacemaker.
We seem to suffer from leadership deficiency both at the Punchayet level and within the religious fraternity. Earlier, a limited franchise elected the trustees of the BPP. Now with the adult franchise system, the worthy candidates shy away from the tainted arena.
Punchayets were established to settle internal disputes without the hassles of litigation and intervention of courts, thereby saving money and time, and settling matters amicably without causing ill feelings among the opponents.
The BPP was once a house of fame. It is today a house of shame. The trustees have become dictators rather than leaders. A wise leader is kind and courteous and persuades people with grace and dignity.
Unity and understanding is the need of the hour. Do we want to elect orthodox warmongers and continue the fight, or do we want leaders who are more persuasive and effective, kind and gracious in words and action? Do we want a candidate strengthening the orthodox lobby which in the name of religion is misguiding the community and causing unnecessary conflicts?
The Zoroastrian religion directs us to the path of freedom, but we punish those who follow their Vohu Mana or the voice of conscience. Such unjust acts of retaliation are dictatorial.
The basic way to follow religion is simple: Treat others as you would want to be treated yourself. Work for the happiness of others, especially those who are suffering.
All community members should practice religion their own way without interference. Once we have the option, all conflicts will be over, and there will be peace and happiness in the community. We shall not only survive, but thrive, bringing back the glorious days of the past. PIROJA HOMI JOKHI
