Intercommunity as well as civil marriages among Parsis registered at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at Khar for the period September-December 2012 are published in this issue. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted from the listing.
The marriage officer at the OCH registered 24 interfaith unions and five community marriages. The Khar registers recorded 19 intercommunity marriages.
Names of those opting for cremation also find a mention here. A scanning of the registers at the Chandanwadi electric crematorium showed that six Zoroastrians were cremated during the four-month period.
In addition to the above data also featured here are births, marriages and deaths that have occurred in the last 15 days of January 2013.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 20 and 42 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 42 years, averaging at 30 years.
As versus 40 deaths there were only five babies born, all boys! The major causes of deaths were heart disease (13 victims — five were in the 80+ age bracket), cancer (seven) and lung disease/pneumonia (six). Hyperkalaemia (excessive potassium in the blood) claimed three patients, while two Zoroastrians each perished due to septicemia, liver disease, kidney failure and old age/general debility. Isolated causes of death were multi organ failure, haematemesis (vomitting of blood) and hypertension. The community lost a 101-year-old lady. The youngest to breathe her last was also a female — at 35 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for January 16-31 in Bombay, was 76 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
