Bhabha Hospital is back

The Khan Bahadur Hormasji Kharshedji Bhabha Hospital, located in the central suburb of Kurla, once again threw open its doors on December 14, 2016 after being shut since May 2015 for major structural repairs. "The Hospital reopened with a variety of new facilities. We have introduced a separate 10-bed space for emergency medical services, intensive care unit (ICU) and a neo-natal intensive care unit. There will be separate male and female wards,” Dr Anuradha Pednekar, area councilor told Afternoon Despatch and Courier (ADC) on December 15, 2016. Outpatients will be catered to in separate departments like tuberculosis, skin, pediatrics, etc.

Before undergoing extensive repairs, the 325-bed Hospital, which is run by the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC), had been in a dangerously dilapidated condition for nearly three years. The Hospital was issued a notice for immediate evacuation as its condition was extremely unsafe. The two-storey building is 24 years old while the adjacent seven-storey structure is three years older. There were concerns about where to relocate the medical facility but that proved not possible and patients had perforce to go to other civic run hospitals like KEM and Sion Hospital.
