Fit to function

"My journey started off in quite the normal fashion from school, straight into an engineering college… Being an athlete and having competed in football, basketball, volleyball and chess, I always had a passion and inclination for sports… I was in my second year at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Shirpur, when I decided to drop out of college. I began to search for something that truly drives me as a professional.” Anosh Commessariat, the Ahmedabad based 28-year-old health professional, co-founded FlexFit (fitness center) with friend and colleague Utsav Panchal in February 2024. He had earlier co-founded, with physiotherapist Dr Rashmikant Shah, HealthyFuture’s sports and exercise science department in December 2021. A bachelor of arts from Gujarat University, Commessariat is a certified personal trainer from the American College of Sports Medicine and is working towards certification for strength and conditioning at the National Strength and Conditioning Association, USA.

After "years of working on cases of osteoporosis, patellofemoral pain (on and around the knee cap) and sciatica, in partnership with physiotherapists, we have found that adding functional fitness-oriented exercises like controlled squats and step-downs not only eliminate pain but also increase the overall endurance and strength of the client in less than six weeks.” Medical conditions such as osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder, sciatica and other issues can most certainly be avoided or delayed for as long as possible with as little as a 30-minute functional strength training exercise program done for three days a week, he told Parsiana on March 10, 2024.
Regular ("plain vanilla”) trainers are individuals whose "licence allows them to work with the general population who are healthy, with no past history of medical illness/complications such as ligament tears, fractures, nerve impingement issues, etc… A trainer is given a toolbox with a set of rules to be followed regardless of a client’s levels, abilities… When any kind of medical condition comes into play, be it heart surgery or ligament surgery, one needs to venture outside that toolbox to account for those limitations… Traditional gym trainers don’t necessarily possess the ability to do so.”
After 40, muscle mass is lost at the rate of three to eight percent per decade and bone mass at 0.3% per year. Depending on the metabolism, fat mass increases up to 70% per decade, he cautioned. "As the body undergoes these changes, the only way to make sure that one maintains health and quality of life is through exercise.
