The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between
25 and 46 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 34 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 30 and 57 years, averaging at 38 years.
Births numbered two and deaths totalled 34 for the first 15 days of October. The major killer as usual was heart disease which felled 13 Zoroastrians, seven of whom were in the 80 and over age bracket. The other killers were: pneumonia/lung disease (six), cancer (four), kidney failure
(three) and old age/general debility, multi organ failure and Alzheimer’s disease (two each). Isolated cases were diabetes, glioblastoma
(a highly malignant brain tumor), brain disease and shock and haemorrhage due to multiple injuries. In the case of one death, the viscera was preserved for a histopathological examination. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the period of October 1-15 in Bombay, was 78 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay
Parsi Punchayet.
In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
