The decision of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet chairman Yazdi Desai revoking his earlier recommendation of Dinshaw Tamboly to the National Commission for Minorities ("A minority decision,” Parsiana, May 21, 2017), was unfortunate, humiliating and irresponsible and also an eye opener to the Government on the rift within the community.

Tamboly is a karma yogi, meticulously honest and a visionary who follows the cardinal principles of Zoroastrianism, viz good thoughts, good words and good deeds in letter and spirit. The Parsi community is grateful to Tamboly for his most laudable and unique services in a number of fields. Through his wonderful contacts, Tamboly procures crores of rupees in charities towards medical, educational and relief of poverty. In fact Tamboly and the World Zoroastrian Organisation (WZO) are household names thanks to their sponsorship of concerts and dramas as also sports events and tournaments.
By personally visiting the interior villages of Gujarat where some Parsi families stay in a hopeless and helpless condition, he has helped in rebuilding their broken houses and even rehabilitating farmers, craftsmen, and the old and the sick. The beautiful Senior Citizens Homes in Navsari have been well managed by Tamboly and his dutiful wife Bachi. In 2014-15 The Nowroze Baug Play Centre publicly honored Tamboly as a Parsi Ratna for spreading happiness. In our prayers we often repeat the words Ushta ahmai ya ahmai Ushta kahmaicheet, meaning happiness to those who give happiness to others.

I am delighted that Dastur Khurshed Dastoor has been chosen as the Parsi member on the National Commission for Minorities.
As an individual, he is rational in his thoughts and pragmatic in his approach. I congratulate him on his appointment and wish him all success at the Commission.
