In keeping with its aim of helping people maintain and improve their vision, the Lions Club of Byculla donated three machines worth Rs 5.75 lakhs to the Ophthalmology Department of the King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital. The machines are essential to sterilize equipment used for surgery at the Hospital, Capt Percy Master, president of the Club informed Parsiana by email.

Present at the inauguration of the machines was chief guest Ashok Mehta, former president of Lions International, along with many members of the Club. After the traditional pooja, Mehta started the machines. Dean of KEM, Dr Avinash Supe was grateful to the Club for supporting need based projects at the Hospital. Master informed those present that it is the aim of the Club to render maximum assistance to public hospitals with a large number of patients. Every day 30 to 40 eye surgeries are performed at the KEM, and over 200 to 300 persons visit the outpatients’ department, he revealed. Doctors and nurses go about their tasks cheerfully and willingly. Public hospitals are rendering yeoman service to the lower, middle class and disadvantaged people of the community, Master said, while reaffirming the Club’s commitment to the cause.
