Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths occured in the first fortnight of November 2006.
Seven births versus 32 deaths were recorded for the 15-day period. Five Zoroastrians died due to hypertention. Pneumomia/lung disease, bronchitis, brain disease, cancer and heart disease (two in the above 80 category) were the causes of deaths of three patients each. Septicemia and liver disease felled two victims each. Isolated causes of deaths were four: diabetes, Non-Hodg-kin’s Lymphoma, sepsis and Alzheimer’s disease. A stillborn baby was lost to the community. A 101-year-old lady breathed her last. Fifty-seven was the youngest age at death. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of November, in Bombay, was 77 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
