Adaran going.” Senior trustee of Calcutta’s Ervad Dhunjeebhoy Byramjee Mehta’s Zoroastrian Anjuman Atash Adaran, Noshir Tankariwala (pictured) conveyed this to Numazar Mehta, senior trustee of the Calcutta Zoroastrian Community’s Religious and Charity Fund before he passed away at age 82 of respiratory failure on September 5, 2020. Mehta related this in a video address to the community.
Tankariwala was "an ardent Zarathushti and was passionate about the wellbeing of the entire community till the very end,” noted his son Jehangir in an email to Parsiana. He recounted aspects of Noshir’s professional career: managing director of Moran Tea Company, president of the Tollygunge Club, honorary consul of Norway for 10 years, chairman of the Tea Research Association, and the longest serving member of the (West Bengal) Minorities Commission.
In 2015, the trustees of the Adaran, including Tankariwala had banned Numazar and Prochy Mehta from bringing their grandchildren to the Adaran. Their daughter Sanaya is married to Sandip Vyas. Prochy and Sanaya filed an Originating Summons in December 2016 in the Calcutta High Court, praying that the Court determine who has the right of entry to the place of worship (see "The concept of gender equality,” Parsiana, July 21, 2017).
Tankariwala’s uthamna was broadcast live on YouTube on September 7. A memorial service for him was broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Calcutta Parsi Club on September 14.
