The Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation (JNAF), the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sanghrahalaya), and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) have collaborated to bring to Bombay audiences the works of artist V. S. Gaitonde (1924-2001) for the first time. Titled "VS Gaitonde: The Silent Observer,” the exhibition is curated for the Jehangir Nicholson Gallery by Dadiba Pundole who first came in contact with the artist when he was a teenager learning the ropes from his father Kali at the family’s Pundole Art Gallery. Gaitonde, rated "one of India’s most compelling artists,” had an association with the Pundole Art Gallery from the start of his career, notes a write-up from JNAF.
The exhibition, on show till November 3, 2019 includes 11 works from the Nicholson Collection, five from TIFR’s, 14 from the Pundole Gallery; three additional works from The Darashaw Collection and the Glenbarra Art Museum (Japan) are also on show.
