Yet another postage stamp will be issued by the Indian government commemorating Dr Dadabhai Naoroji later in 2017, his 100th death anniversary year, according to a communication from Vispi Dastur, president of the Empire of India Philatelic Society. The Grand Old Man of India has been honored twice previously: in 1963, with a 15 paise olive green 2.9 cm x 3.9 cm stamp to mark his birth anniversary that year (Naoroji was born on September 4, 1825). In August 1993, a six rupee, multi colored, 3.3 cm x 2.8 cm stamp marked the 100th year of his election to the House of Commons in the UK. Naoroji is also remembered in a one rupee 1985 stamp, along with other presidents of the Indian National Congress, issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the political body. A five-rupee coin issued in 2003 also commemorates Naoroji.
Memorializing Naoroji: previously issued stamps and a coin
Dastur informs Parsiana that the Society was formed in 1941 by Jal Cooper, internationally recognized philatelist and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Cooper is "the only philatelist to be commemorated on a postage stamp.” The 10-rupee stamp was released in 1997, the golden jubilee year of India’s Independence.
