Based on the information from one south Bombay hospital and families who provide copies of birth certificates there were only three births! Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 60.
Cancer beat heart disease to become the major killer claiming 14 lives. Heart disease felled 11 of whom eight were over the age of 80. The other killers were: lung disease/pneumonia (nine), hypertension, septicemia and kidney failure (three each) and multi organ failure and brain disease (two each). Isolated causes of deaths were attributed to liver disease, hemiparesis (a slight paralysis or weakness of one side of the face or body), burns, diabetes, lower respiratory tract infection, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), cellulitis, empyema (a collection of pus in a cavity, hollow organ or space), kidney failure, vertigo, Alzheimer’s disease, urinary tract infection, asthma, sepsis, old age/general debility and hyperkalemia (abnormally low potassium level of the blood). The youngest and eldest to breathe their last were both males, at ages 39 and 97 respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for August 2015 in Bombay was 79 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by one hospital — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
