Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital has launched Bombay’s first special school in a hospital for pediatric patients, on June 28, 2018. Hospital chief executive officer (CEO) Dr Minnie Bodhanwala told Parsiana on July 5 that special educators like speech therapists, physiologists and vision rehabilitation specialists will be appointed. Named Centre for Empowerment of Children With Disabilities (CECWD), the institute will accommodate up to 40 children, including autistic children "who need special attention in their education and training to live a self-sustained life,” Bodhanwala was quoted in a report in mid-day of July 2. Since the Hospital receives about 1,200 differently abled children as patients annually and many of them need to visit nearly daily, "we thought of starting a school system at the Hospital that would run till 5 p.m. on weekdays,” Bodhanwala told the newspaper. Quoting from the 2011 census, the mid-day report stated that in Maharashtra alone, there were 6,26,809 people living with disabilities in the 0-19 age group, with 44,080 of these having multiple disabilities.   ...
