Since each Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) election costs the trust about Rs 40 lakhs and a fairly large amount is spent by the candidates as well, it would be better to avoid interim elections and let the candidates be elected uncontested. There are two vacancies, one of former BPP chairman Yazdi Desai in whose place his wife Anahita is contesting. She has a track record of excellent social service for the community. The only reason she could not win over her adversaries in earlier elections is because the community was opposed to conferring power on a husband and wife duo. Now that Yazdi is not in the picture, Anahita remains a better choice.
The other vacancy is due to the untimely demise of Zarir Bhathena. Solicitor Berjis Desai has decided to stand for election. Having him as a trustee will be of immense advantage as his qualifications, experience, wit and wisdom will work wonders for the BPP.
The next general election is a year and-a-half away and we would do well to elect the two candidates unopposed this time after which all seven should put in their papers and seek a fresh mandate.
Since the first election by universal adult franchise in 2008 we have not till date framed a legal code of conduct to encourage free and unbiased elections. In 2014, some stalwarts from the community had come together to form a charter of coexistence, but that too was shelved. We had been apprised about an advisory committee but are unaware of whether it is working or not. If we have some guidelines to follow on important issues, we shall not keep fighting endlessly on insignificant matters.
We are an educated, enlightened community, yet we have no freedom to act as per our will. Do we have to stifle our conscience and obey the unethical and irreligious orders of ignorant, self-proclaimed leaders? PIROJA HOMI JOKHI

Berjis Desai should continue writing for Parsiana even after becoming a Bombay Parsi Punchayet trustee. I hope he completes his full term as trustee.
