Sustaining livelihoods

"Our karigars (craftspeople) like millions of other skilled and unskilled workers have been affected. We have made sure to sustain their livelihood and pay their salaries. This is an effort to drum up more business to make sure more than 150 of our craftswomen and men have their livelihood,” stated couturier Ashdeen Lilaowala (pictured below). "Each week we will select one of our favorite saris and offer it at an edited (discounted) price,” said the Delhi-based designer. The first sari to be featured shows yesteryear’s diva of Hindi movies, Waheeda Rehman (pictured above), dressed in one of his creations. The image showcased Lilaowala’s traditional rose and bird border. "This classic gara” which has "off-white embroidery on an emerald green crepe jacquard fabric,” was available from June 29 to July 6 at Rs 70,000 against the original price of Rs 86,350. The sale will continue "for at least two to three months till the ‘wedding season’ and the retail industry is back on its feet,” he wrote. The designer’s preoccupation with cranes (the birds) as a motif on garas continues. "That will be the pièce de résistance,” he stated.     ...
