BPP think tank

"The Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) trustees are not the sole repository of all the wisdom in this world and some of us had been contemplating this idea since quite some time... It’s good that it has finally fructified,” wrote trustee Noshir Dadrawala. He was responding to Parsiana’s request for more information on their press release of August 30, 2019 appointing a 16-member consultative committee comprising "prominent Parsis from different walks of life with specialist skill sets.” Added trustee Kersi Randeria (pictured, who initiated the idea) in a phone interview on September 4, "the committee has had two meetings so far... The objective is to leverage the members’ knowledge, expertise and goodwill... We want to not just repair our (BPP’s) image but to show that we are working well together... This (initiative) will go a long, long, way.” The press release clarified that "the ultimate decision making authority remains only with the trustees.” As stated Dadrawala, the committee will be a "think tank of ideas and assist the BPP in working more strategically... and in a sustainable manner.”
Formed to "resolve and move forward on some of the long standing issues and challenges concerning the community’s assets and community’s welfare” and to "provide a sounding board to the trustees,” a core group comprising five committee members will meet more frequently. "Perhaps twice a month,” noted Dadrawala. The larger 16-member committee will meet "as often as required...we leave it to the members to decide among themselves,” he said.
The consultative committee consists of Udvada High Priest and member of the National Commission for Minorities Dastur Khurshed Dastoor; former BPP trustee Arnavaz Mistry; lawyer Berjis Desai, lawyer and former BPP trustee Burjor Antia; businessman Cyrus Guzder; former BPP trustee and chairperson of the World Zoroastrian Organisation (WZO) Trust Funds Dinshaw Tamboly; former chairman of BPP Dinshaw Mehta, former Tata executive Fali Poncha; businessman Hector Mehta; lawyer and chairman of The B. D. Petit Parsee General Hospital (PGH) Homa Petit; ex banker Hoshi Sinor; former BPP trustees Jimmy Mistry and Khojeste Mistree; advertising professional Sam Balsara; chartered accountant Yezdi Bhagwagar and senior chartered accountant Yezdi Malegam. The five-member core group will comprise of Dastoor, Desai, Tamboly, Bhagwagar and Balsara. "Everyone will have something to contribute,” stated Randeria.
As narrated Dadrawala, "As of the moment all 16 members are very enthusiastic and positive and we do not foresee challenges... These are all persons of professional competence, vast experience and above all else, have the passion to do something good, concrete and lasting for the community.”
The subjects that will "occupy the trustees and the consultative committee in the coming months” will be the new buildings at S. B. Bharucha, Godrej and B. S. Panthaki Baugs and Dadar Parsi Colony; PGH and Parsi Lying-In Hospitals; the Bhabha Sanatorium, the Maj Morena Trust and the maintenance of Doongerwadi, stated the press release. Dadrawala maintained that for the moment, the focus will be on the nine matters listed therein. It is probable that the "focus may be narrowed down to just three so as not to dissipate and dilute attention over too many issues,” he added. Randeria stated that "we can only move forward in the interest of the community.”
Another reason for forming the committee, according to Randeria, is that "the good being done by the BPP is being forgotten.” The committee will help the BPP build a positive opinion among community members, he hoped. Adding to the "need to uphold the highest tradition of transparency” alluded to in the press release, Randeria stated that on the cards are structured Baug meetings and even a Samast Anjuman meeting to highlight the working of the apex trust.
