With reference to Prochy Mehta’s letter "Who is not a Parsi” (Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, May 7-20, 2025), the question that Parsi/Irani Zarathushtis in India have been asking for more than a century is "Who is a Parsi or Irani Zarathushti?” They have approached the judiciary to settle this question. I suggest that the matter be decided by the community rather than the judiciary.
Whichever choice is selected by the majority of voters will then be the legal definition of a Parsi/Irani Zarathushti in India. JAL S. DESAI
The editors reply:
The definition was pronounced by the Bombay High Court. It is up to the courts to alter that definition. A referendum may endorse a certain point of view but the courts have to decide on who constitutes a Parsi.
