This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the former half of July 2010.
Deaths at Bombay’s Doon-gerwadi numbered 30. Births cut a sorry figure for the first 15 days of July. Intimation of only four births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Heart disease as the major killer felled seven Zoroastrians. Four of them were 80 years and above. Cancer killed six patients, while four succumbed to lung disease/pneumonia. Hypertension, septicemia, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and kidney failure claimed two lives each. The age range fluctuated between 56 and 92 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first fortnight of July, in Bombay, was 78 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
