The 101st baby

Having successfully availed of fertility assistance earlier, some couples are going in for a second child. Pearl Mistry, a counselor with the Jiyo Parsi (JP) program, implemented by the Parzor Foundation, Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) told The Indian Express (IE) of July 4, 2017.
In June this year, JP celebrated the birth of its 101st baby. The program has received a grant of Rs 10 crore from the Ministry of Minority Affairs to increase the community’s population through medical fertility assistance and advocacy. Since 2014, 400 people have been counseled personally and over 22,000 have been covered in group sessions, as part of JP’s advocacy initiative, notes the report. "Our advocacy is (aimed at influencing) the mindset of the community to have more than one child and marry at the correct age,” according to program coordinator Dr Katy Gandevia of TISS.
"Only one family in nine has a child below the age of 10… The Total Fertility Rate of the Parsi community has reached below one,” Parzor founder Dr Shernaz Cama was quoted in the IE report. She informed the newspaper that 31% of the community is over the age of 60 and nearly the same percentage is single. The Indian Council of Medical Research had forewarned JP that medical intervention in later age groups would have only a 30% success rate. JP will launch their next wave of publicity titled ‘Joy of Family’ on July 29.
