Fifty-year-old artist Anahita Kaka, who rekindled her passion for painting while at home nursing a daughter’s injured leg, held her first exhibition of 72 ink and paper sketches and 17 oil-acrylic images at the Sofitel Gallery, at the Bandra Kurla Complex, between February 1 and 15. The show was the result of her daughters’ goading. "‘Why don’t you take (painting) up seriously again,’ (daughters) Ava (22), and Meher (19), urged me," she told Parsiana on February 13. "They were now old enough to look after themselves so I went back to painting full-time," she said.

"My inspiration is myself," the self-taught Bombay based artist told us. She explained that "in a small room on the balcony in Dadar’s Parsi Colony," her art was "greatly influenced by her surroundings." Kaka states that though she obtained admission to the Sir J. J. School of Art after class 12, "all her elders compelled her to take up a Bachelor in Arts, which she completed at Sophia College." The general notion in her family was that artists do not make money, she said!
