"As you are a devoted Congress worker and seeing your efforts towards strengthening the Congress Party, you are hereby appointed as Ward president at Ward No. 202, Byculla Taluka of South Mumbai, Congress Committee Minority Department,” wrote Kalim Khan, president of the Committee to Ronnie Pheroz Bugwadia in a letter dated August 16, 2012, a copy of which was forwarded to Parsiana.
The 59-year-old politico has been a member of the Indian National Congress since 1975, having worked in close association with MLA (member of the legislative assembly) Madhu Chavan and MP (Member of Parliament) Murli Deora, his forte being social work. His duties in the minority cell are a continuum of this, where he provides varied types of assistance to members of his constituency, often taking them to the chairman to sort out their problems. To implement the government’s policies for uplifting the minorities, his duties involve encouraging persons to become literate and educated. For this he coordinates with minority run schools and helps people get admissions. The party also helps to obtain assistance required by the institutions. Another important task is to maintain communal harmony and peace, Bugwadia mentions, for which they are in constant touch with law enforcement officials and influential community leaders. When asked by Parsiana over the telephone whether the troubled ones who come to him include Parsi Zoroastrians he replied in the negative, saying that they are mostly Muslims who live in the area. In fact, in the circumstances, he confessed that he was "surprised” that he, a Parsi, had been selected though he is proud of the fact that he is the first one from the community to occupy this post.
A Rustom Baug resident, Bugwadia lives there with his wife Tanaz and 24-year-old son Meherzad. His daughter Behnaz, 27, is married to Malcolm Ghista.
