Cinema woes

Lack of adequate film screens and an over-vigilant Central Board of Film Certification (commonly referred to as the Censor Board) are currently irking film director, screenwriter, actor, playback singer and lyricist Farhan Akhtar (pictured). "Until there’s a theater in every nook and cranny, making it easy to get off TV/Internet, and catch a film at a cinema nearby, it’d be impossible to compete with alternate sources of entertainment that will only grow in the future,” he wrote his column "Bollywood Bole Toh” (a slang word used when a person does not understand someone) in the Midday of July 29, 2017. Laying down the challenges before the film industry, Akhtar lamented, "It’s hard enough to tell stories we want to, given the censors decide what that should be. Once the content does get created, where do you even watch them? There are hardly any cinemas.”
Against the world average of 47.8 cinema screens per million of population, India has only 8.5, quotes the film director. China adds 27 new film screens every day, he notes. The massive "Friday box-office clash” between two big movies is an Indian phenomenon, "because we don’t have enough screens to even accommodate two blockbusters on the same weekend!” The Censor Board is "treating audiences like little children, rather than thinking adults. Where did a whole new 1.3 billion people who supposedly can’t handle different kinds of entertainment suddenly appear from?” he asked rhetorically.
Son of Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, both screenwriters in Bollywood, the global movie encyclopedia Internet Movie Database (IMDb) credits him with having acted in a dozen movies, with three in pre and post-production stages, and produced 23. He has written the dialogs / screenplays for 10 films and directed five.
Farhan’s sister Zoya is an award winning director and screen writer. Honey, in addition to being a screenplay writer, was also a child-star in Bollywood and has acted in over 70 movies. Honey’s sister Daisy Irani was a child artiste too in the movies. Yet another sister, Menaka is mother to screen personalities Farah and Sajid Khan.
