Two Parsis were resurrected after the Parsi media inadvertently termed them dead. One publication’s Facebook page had stated
that Dastur (Dr) Peshotan Mirza (pictured) had died following "a tenacious battle with cancer” while a newborn child, Ayaan Kaiwan Gonda from Hyderabad-Secunderabad, featured in the death column of another newspaper though the announcement was for his birth. A correction was immediately carried on their Facebook page.
Prior to major surgery on May 5, Mirza’s family had sent out an appeal for O positive blood, to which some well-wisher included the words "only Parsi donors needed.” This requirement was termed the "height of stupid racism and baseless orthodoxy” by Vispi Wadia of the Association for the Revival of Zoroastrianism. He questioned: "How can a noble gesture of saving a life by blood or organ donation be restricted and discriminated in the name of religion?”
Bombay Parsi Punchayet trustee Viraf Mehta clarified that "due to bleeding and low platelet count he (Mirza) had to be given blood transfusion from (the Hospital’s) blood bank. The Hospital had requested his daughter Aban Mirza to replace 25 sachets of blood… There were unsubstantiated rumors spread by some persons that only Parsi donors were accepted…I have personally spoken to and clarified the position with his daughter and caregiver and this rumor is factually incorrect... Any donor (not necessarily only Parsi/Irani) may contact her at the Jaslok Hospital.”
The matter made it to the mainstream Press with the Mumbai Mirror of May 10, 2016 headlining its report: "Donor search for ailing Parsi priest stirs up bad blood.”
At the time of going to press, Mirza was making a slow but steady recovery at the Hospital.
