The age of Zoroastrian brides as listed in this issue) ranged between 21 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 23 and 44 years, averaging at 29 years.
The first month of the new year saw the birth of 16 new lives and the end of 62. Twenty-two of those succumbed to diseases of the heart, 13 being 80 years and above. Old age/general debility claimed six lives whereas lung related diseases felled five Zoroastrians. Cancer, septicemia and diabetes took a toll on four victims each. The other killers were brain disease and hypertension (three each) and burns, haema-temesis (vomitting of blood) and multi organ failure (two each). Paralysis, sclerosis (abnormal hardening or fibrosis of a tissue), prostate, respiratory tract infection and Parkinson’s disease were the isolated cases mentioned. Two infants (a 10-day-old baby boy and a 3½-month-old girl) were also lost to the community. On the other hand the eldest to die was a 101-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for January, in Bombay, was 75 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
