Another twist to the unsolved murder case of then 52-year-old Calcutta resident Navaz Wadia (pictured) in 2001 was added with the arrest and remand to custody of arms smuggler Mohammed Mohid, reported The Telegraph of February 2, 2017. 
Sixteen years after she was gunned down at point-blank range in that city’s busy Dalhousie Square area, the police have determined that Wadia was killed by a then 16-year-old who "had allegedly pulled the trigger for Rs 50,000,” according to the report. A possible money motive had emerged during the investigation, but the police could not build on the case until December 2016, according to the report.
The gunman’s name is being withheld by the police as he was a minor when the crime was committed, but it has emerged that he was in the employ of Mohid, whose wife Catherine Kindo was previously Wadia’s trusted domestic help. The report stated that the spinster had named Kindo as a nominee in her insurance policy worth Rs 200,000. Mohid, also "much loved by Navaz,” had allegedly plotted the murder to get the money. The report stated that on the day of the murder, Kindo had "pushed her way through the crowd… and ‘found’ Navaz in a pool of blood and had taken her to a nursing home in a police vehicle.” Police are "yet to find any evidence to suspect Kindo’s involvement in the alleged murder plot.”
Dinaz Howe, Wadia’s elder sister informed Parsiana on March 13, 2017 that the domestic help was questioned for three months after the murder at Lal Bazaar Police Station and then let go. Wadia had provided the servant with all the comforts of home and even paid for her to learn stitching and embroidery, she added. Reportedly Wadia was one of only four employees working in ICI’s (Imperial Chemical Industries) almost vacant, four-storied office building on Chowringhee when the company was in the process of selling its India assets, she informs us.
