Babies born, marriages solem-nized and deaths that primarily occurred between the 16th and 31st of May 2014 have been mentioned herewith. Interfaith marriages taken place between January to May of this year as well as names of Zoroastrians who have opted for cremation as their last funerary rites have also been published in this issue.
Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at Khar. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.
Interfaith unions numbered 26 at the OCH and 15 at Khar, whereas the civil marriages count was two and one respectively.
Thirteen Zoroastrians did not wish to be consigned to the Doongerwadi and opted to be cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium during the five month period.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 46 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 30 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 26 and 46 years, averaging at 33 years.
Based on the information from one south Bombay hospital and families who provide copies of birth certificates there were only four babies born. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 46. Diseases of the heart were the major cause of death for 17 Zoroastrians (twelve of whom were octogenarians and nonagenarians). Lung disease/pneumonia claimed six victims while four patients each succumbed to kidney failure, cancer, old age/general debility and brain disease. Two lives were lost to urosepsis and septicemia while hypertension, fever and bed sores felled single persons. The eldest to breathe her last was a female one year short of her centenary, while the youngest to perish was a 67-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last fortnight of May in Bombay, was 84 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
