The Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) has instituted the Soli J. Sorabjee (pictured) Endowment Award and Scholarship to honor the memory of the senior jurist and former attorney general of India who passed away on April 30, 2021 (see "Fidelity to freedom,”
Parsiana, May 21-June 6, 2021). Endowed by senior advocate Satvik Varma, this Award will be conferred annually upon a deserving student in the field of human rights law and theory offered as part of the School’s undergraduate program, reported legal website Barandbench.com on September 21, 2021. To be announced annually for 20 years, the Award will be declared on March 9 each year, Sorabjee’s birth anniversary, noted the website.
Barandbench.com stated that Sorabjee’s family "welcomed the initiative and said that it was a great way to remember and celebrate him and perpetuate his memory… (They) shared a message they wished to convey to the students at JGLS: ‘Tread Ye the Path of Justice and Equity in All Things,’ a quote from the Kitab-i-Aqdas, the central book of the Baha’i faith which deeply signifies the Baha’i perspectives of justice.”
Varma was quoted on the website as stating that Sorabjee’s passing was a "huge personal loss… His values and passion have deeply inspired and influenced me. And his loss has left the legal community in India and abroad with a void.” Announcing the Award, founding vice chancellor of O. P. Jindal Global University, Prof (Dr) C. Raj Kumar said, "The purpose of the Scholarship is to promote academic excellence, research, integrity and diversity by recognizing the outstanding academic achievement of a student in (the) course on human rights.”
The Delhi-based JGLS was established in 2009 and is recognized by the University Grants Commission and is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities, according to its website.
