I believe, I will, I can is management consultant Bomi Doctor’s (pictured) second offering, the earlier book being The Leadership Handbook. Here, Doctor advocates the development of the "I believe” spirit to bridge the difference between failure and success
and provides guidance along with handy hints to achieve the goal.
In the section on how to inculcate the "I believe” spirit, Doctor elaborates on how one can train oneself to "ignite the starting gun.” Setting up immediate and short term incentives; learning to be relied on; taking pride in one’s work and achievements; being willing to accept challenging assignments; giving respect where due; and enjoying "down time to the fullest” are among his guidelines.
Short term goals help build confidence. One also needs to know what one is capable of so that one can stretch that ability to increase one’s levels of attainment. The author urges people to compete with themselves to become better. Even failures should be used to motivate one to higher levels of success; one must not waste one’s potential.
"Since self-determination is psychological growth” it’s important to be in control of one’s behavior, to master the skill sets required for success. Only then will one be enabled to admit to mistakes and correct the course.
Movement is the fundamental principle of "I believe,” Doctor writes. Constant movement is mandated for any individual to start on the path to success. "You can’t be what you were yesterday; there has to be forward movement… New goals must move into place and be targeted with the same ferocity and single-mindedness.”
The 99-page handbook, printed in a clear, readable font and published in 2022 by notionpress.com is available for Rs 200 — not too big a price to pay for this "time-tested recipe to develop inner strength and self-belief.” S.V.
