The Goolrookh Gupta (pictured) case is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court (SC) in "the first week of August for final 
disposal,” stated Gupta’s lawyer and sister Shiraz Patodia to Parsiana on April 21, 2017. The "long date is due to the upcoming (summer) vacation” of the Court, she added.
The case pertains to a resolution passed by the Valsad Parsi Anjuman barring women married to non-Parsis from entering the Valsad fire temple and Doongerwadi. Gupta’s elderly parents, Adi and Dina Contractor live in Valsad and Gupta is concerned about not being able to attend their funeral rites on their death. Two of a three-member bench of the Gujarat High Court had ruled that a woman married under the Special Marriage Act takes on the religion of her husband.
The SC bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra, A. M. Khanwilkar and M. M. Shantanagoudar had observed on April 20 that the issue dealt with the religious identity of a woman. "There has to be a broader canvas of understanding,” the observation of the bench was reported on ndtv.com. Gupta’s lawyer Indira Jaising told the Court that Gupta was denied entry to the Tower of Silence at Valsad for the funeral of (some relatives) and that there was no law in India which said the wife must adopt her husband’s religion.
