Fifty-four-year-old Parel resident Roomy Shroff, who considers the Breach Candy Swimming Club as his second home, has been reinstated as a member after being suspended from the elite club four years ago, reports mid-day of May 15, 2017.
"I started writing letters… through my lawyer Rashna Dastur, where I stated my side to the story,” he told the daily. Shroff also withdrew a one-and-a-half crore suit for damages he had slapped on the Club’s committee. The suspension order was lifted last month after Dastur appeared before a recently appointed committee of administrators of the Club. The previous committee that had ordered the suspension was dissolved last year, noted the report.
Shroff told the newspaper that he believed that his ouster was the result of "a false complaint” filed against him by a lady member, who alleged he had behaved badly. Shroff explained in the report that he was simply asking her driver to move her car which was obstructing the driveway. Noting that the suspension was "without a stipulated time limit,” Shroff alleged that that he was ousted as he had "submitted a list of ‘uncomfortable’ questions to the committee before the 2012 annual general meeting (AGM) and was suspended a day before that meeting. The member’s questions centered around the tendering process and whether a new building was proposed to be added.
A member of the Club since 1976, Shroff notes that Dastur and counsel Venkatesh Dhondh had taken up his case pro bono "since they felt an injustice should be righted.”
