Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, starting the game to replace the concussed Tua Tagovailoa, was injured and out of the game after one snap. Left tackle Terron Armstead, attempting to play through a toe injury, left the game a few plays later. First Quarter Recap and Reactions

The Dolphins won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Jets received the opening kickoff, with Miami kicker Jason Sanders putting the ball through the endzone for a touchback. Miami comes NFL Beanies into this game with both of their starting cornerbacks sidelined, Xavien Howard inactive due to a groin injury and Byron Jones still on the physically unable to perform list. The Jets immediately went to the air with Wilson throwing passes to rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson on first down for 11 yards, then to running back Michael Carter for six yards. Carter picked up two yards on the 2nd-and-4 play, with Christian Wilkins knocking down the pass. The Jets were forced to punt.

Good start for the defense The cornerbacks are going to be tested all day and they have to respond. Wilkins making an impact on the first drive should be a good sign for Miami. Having a defensive line creating pressure and disrupting passing lanes may be the best thing the Dolphins could have happen for the defense. Now time to see what Bridgewater can do.

Starting at their own eight-yard line, the d buffalo bills store.com rive quickly ended for Miami. Cornerback Sauce Gardner blitzed on first down and had a clear shot at Bridgewater. As Bridgwater attempted to throw the pass, appearing to target running back Raheem Mostert and having the ball land near tight end Durham Smythe, he was called for intentional grounding and a safety. Jets 2-0.

I do not understand the safety call. Clearly, Bridgewater was looking toward Mostert and was hit as he threw the ball. It landed near Smythe. He did not throw the ball toward an empty part of the field to avoid the sack, he was hit as he tried to throw a pass. Just a bad call, and replay should have looked at it.

The Dolphins' defense stepped up after the safety, giving up 11 yards on a first down play, but then stuffing the Jets on their next three attempts. The drive ended with Jerome Baker sacking Wilson and leading to a punt.

That was exactly what the defense needed to do.

Bridgewater spent the entire defensive possession in the medical tent and then headed into the locker room with an elbow injury and possible NFL iPhone Cases head injury. Skylar Thompson, the team’s seventh-round pick, replaced him under center, with the ball at the Dolphins’ three-yard line. Thompson’s first regular season snap in the NFL did not happen as a three-yard run from Mostert was called back for an illegal formation penalty on Miami. On the second try of a first snap, Thompson found Tyreek Hill for a six-yard pass. Miami’s drive was assisted a couple of plays later when Thompson targeted Hill 34 yard down field, with the receiver adjusting to the pass and drawing a defensive pass interference penalty. Three incomplete passes, not including a 12-yard run from Thompson that was called back for a holding penalty, led to a Miami punt however.

The Dolphins are out of sorts right now, and injuries are continuing to mount. With Bridgewater appearing to be out now, the team needs to protect their rookie quarterback. Terron Armstead, the team’s left tackle, however left the game during the possession. He has been dealing with a toe injury and trying to play through it. No immediate word on his status.

Wilson started the drive with an incomplete pass, then Carter was stopped after just a three-yard gain. Wilson was able to find Corey Davis for a 17-yard gain on 3rd-and-7 to give the Jets a new set of downs. Back-to-b buffalo bills t shirt mens ack face mask penalties on the Dolphins negated a six-yard tackle for a loss from Melvin Ingram and a six-yard sack by Raekwon Davis, giving the Jets 30 free yards. They were unable to do anything after the penalties, however, and settled for a 34-yard field goal from Greg Zuerlein. Jets 5-0.

The Dolphins are a mess right now. They need to take a step back, catch their breath, and then come back out. Penalties, injuries, and self-inflicted mistakes, it is just a bad way to start a game. Luckily they are only down five.

Miami’s offense came out still looking to find a rhythm but was unable to get it done on the possession. After a four-yard run from Mostert, Thompson threw a bubble screen to Hill, but as the receiver tried to find a way forward, he ran back across the field only to be tackled for a one-yard loss. On 3rd-and-7, Thompson threw to receiver Trent Sherfield, but it was only for five yards and Miami punted on the three-and-out drive.

Head coach Mike McDaniel has to be doing his best to calm Thompson and get the offense into some sort of rhythm. The lack of a run game all season could come back to haunt the team here.

The Jets wasted no time in getting all the way down the field. Starting at their own 20-yard line, Wilson was able to find a wide-open Breece Hall as the rookie running back leaked out of the backfield. He then ran all the way to the one-yard line, ending the quarter with a 79-yard catch-and-run.

Second Quarter Recap and Reactions

Michael Carter came in on the first play of the period, punching the ball in from the one-yard line for the score. Jets 12-0.

Miami needs to figure something out, quickly.

They finally did, turning to the running game to find a spark. After a couple of short passes to Hill, the Dolphins were assisted by a 27-yard defensive pass interference penalty, setting them up with a 1st-and-10 at the Jets’ 38-yard line. Mostert then picked up three yards, then five yards on two runs. After a pass from Thompson to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, with Thompson scrambling and somehow finding a diving Waddle for seven yards, running back Chase Edmonds picked up a yard. A reverse run from Hill picked up 10 yards before Mostert finished the possession with a 12-yard run for the score. Jets 12-7.

There is the start of the running game. Now Miami needs to keep it up.

Miami’s defense stepped up after the score to shut down the Jets. After a pass breakup by linebacker Jerome Baker with the ball hitting him in the helmet on the play, a false start penalty backed up New York. An incomplete pass followed by a nine-yard pass on 3rd-and-15 led to a three-and-out from the Jets.

The Dolphins need to take advantage here. The defense is trying to keep the team in this game while the offense figure itself out.

Mostert started the drive with a strong 15-yard run for the Dolphins, moving the ball out to the Miami 44-yard line. Thompson looked to wide receiver River Cracraft on the next play, but the ball was deflected and intercepted by Sauce Gardner.

Ouch. Bad luck on this play, with Gardner able to undercut Cracraft because of the deflection.

Michael Carter lost two yards on the first play of the drive, but Wilson made up for it with a 13-yard pass to Garrett Wilson for a first down. The Jets then turned to Breece Hall, who picked up 12 yards, nine yards, and five yards on the next three plays, setting up New York with a 1st-and-Goal from the Miami 9-yard line. Michael Carter picked up four yards on the next play, then Hall was stopped for no gain. On 3rd-and-Goal from the 5-yard line, Zach Wilson scrambled for the five-yard touchdown run. Jets 19-7.

The Jets turned to the ground attack on the drive, and Miami struggled to stop it. The quick turnaround after the interception likely did not allow the defense to even catch their breath, and New York went physical with the power run. Miami needs to make an adjustment.

WIth 2:38 remaining in the half, Miami returned to the ground game for the first two plays of the drive, seeing Mostert pick up three yards, then 24 yards as the clock ran down to the 2-minute warning. After the break, Mostert picked up four yards, then Thompson threw to tight end Durham Smythe for eight yards. Mostert ran for another three yards before an incomplete pass brought up 3rd-and-7. Thompson then found Hill for a 10-yard gain, with the receiver somehow keeping the ball away from D.J. Reed who looked like he thought he had the interception. On first down, Thompson got lucky that the pass fell incomplete instead of getting picked off when he targeted Mostert but threw the ball behind the running back. On 2nd-and-10, Thompson lasered a ballot Hill for a 13-yard gain, setting up 1st-and-Goal from the New York 10-yard line with 10 seconds remaining. Mostert caught a pass for nine yards. With four seconds remaining and the ball at the one-yard line, Thompson dropped into a shotgun formation and appeared to be making signals to the receivers when Smythe came under center, took the snap and scored. Jets 19-14.

Okay, the Dolphins are still in the game after a rough first half.

The Jets knelt to kill the clock after the kickoff.

Halftime Reactions

Miami still being in the game is a good result at this point. Thompson is trying to find himself in a game he was not expected to be playing. The defense is trying to hold it together enough to keep the game close so the offense has time to settle into a rhythm. The Jets finding their run game late in the half is worrisome. The defense needs to be able to step up and stop that.

The Dolphins get the ball to start the second half, so after losing their second-string quarterback and having to go to their seventh-round rookie, losing their Pro Bowl left tackle, giving up a safety and an interception, Miami could have the lead if they can get a touchdown to open the second half.

Third Quarter Recap and Reactions

Dolphins start with the ball in the second half, looking to back up a first-half ending score with a second-half opening one. Mostert ran for no gain on the first play, then Thompson threw to Hill for nine yards. On 3rd-and-1, Mostert powered through the middle for a three-yard gain. Mostert then picked up another 20 yards on the ground followed by three more. Myles Gaskin came in to spell Mostert, picking up six yards, then three yards, then stopped for no gain. Miami tried to pull out a trick play, with Hill taking the end around, then throwing back to Thompson for the double pass, but the defense was still engaged on Thompson after the handoff, so Hill ran all the way back across the offense and turned a sure loss into a three-yard gain. An incomplete pass on third down, however, led to Miami settling for a 46-yard field goal from Jason Sanders. Jets 19-17.

Miami was unable to take the lead, but they did double up on the scoring on either side of halftime, and are now within two. Mostert topped 100 yards for the game with the 20 yard gain, so that definitely deserves:

Starting at their own 25-yard line, the Jets came out looking to answer the Dolphins’ score. Breece Hall picked up three yards up the middle, then an incomplete pass was negated by a defensive pass interference penalty called on Miami rookie cornerback Kader Kohou. A false start penalty on the next play negated some of the pass interference gain. An illegal use of hands penalty on Dolphins cornerback Nik Needham on the next play, however, gave the five yards back to New York. Wilson was able to throw to C.J. Uzomah for three yards on the next play then Breece picked up five yards and one yard on back-to-back runs. Going for it on 4th-and-1, the Jets saw a Wilson pass fall incomplete and they turned over the ball on downs.

Interesting choice to go for it on 4th-and-1 with a two-point lead. Miami gets the ball at their own 45-yard line. Now they need to use the good field position to finally take the lead.

Nothing really happened for Miami on the drive. Mostert picked up five yards on first down, but an incomplete pass on second down was followed by a sack of Thompson on the third play. The Dolphins punted on a three-and-out possession.

The drive was disappointing, but at least the punt from Thomas Morstead was a good one, pinning the Jets back at their own 7-yard line.

New York started the possession with a six-yard pass from Wilson to Michael Carter. After an incomplete p Richard Sherman Jerseys ass, they were able to convert the first down with an 11-yard pass to wide receiver Jeff Smith. Carter then picked up two yards on a run. Wilson was sacked on a blitz by safety Brandon Jones, losing 17 yards, on 2nd-and-8, with Breece Hall moving the ball back up 17 yards on a run on the next play before the Jets punted.

Brandon Jones absolutely timed the blitz perfectly. He bit on the play fake and was so far into the backfield that he was still able to recover and make the tackle to essentially end the drive. Great play from Jones to get his first sack of the season and second of the game for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins started their position with a run from Mostert for four yards as the third quarter ended.

Fourth Quarter Recap and Reactions

Miami picked up after switching ends of the field with a pass play, but the pressure got to Thompson who just barely got the ball away for the incomplete pass. Thompson then looked deep for Waddle, just the second time the receiver was targeted on the day, with a 34-yard defensive pass interference penalty called on the play. Moster then picked up five yards, only for a false start penalty to back up the Dolphins five yards. After an incomplete pass and a timeout, Miami picked up five yards on a pass to Waddle. It set up a 54-yard field goal attempt from Sanders, but the ball hooked wide right.

Disappointing to not get points and the lead there. The ball just tailed a little to the right, sliding past the uprights. The Dolphins have to get back to running the ball because they cannot ask Thompson to pick up long yards right now.

New York began with the ball at their own 44-yard line. Wilson immediately found wide receiver Corey Davis down the field for a 21-yard gain. From the Miami 35-yard line, Michael Carter picked up eight yards, then Breece Hall was able to gain one yard. After a timeout, on 3rd-and-1, the Jets picked up the first down on a three-yard pass from Wilson to Garrett Wilson. After a one-yard run, Breece Hall picked up one yard then backed it up with a 21-yard catch. Michael Carter finished the drive with a one-yard run for th buffalo bills jersey custom e score. Jets 26-17.

That hurts. Miami came so close to gaining the lead, but now see it extended to nine points. Miami has 9:22 seconds to score twice now.

The drive started with a delay of game penalty as Thompson buffalo bills 25 jersey could not get the snap quickly enough. On the 1st-and-15 play, Thompson held the ball too long as the pocket collapsed around him. As he was sacked, the ball popped loose and Quinnen Williams recovered it for the Jets, returning the ball 12 yards to the Miami 5-yard line.

That probably is going to do it for any comeback from Miami. The Jets will likely score here and Miami does not have the offensive firepower with Thompson in the game to get back into the contest with three scores. Thompson looked like a rookie on that drive and it bit the Dolphins hard.

One play after the turnover, Breece Hall scored on the five-yard run. Jets 33-17.

Miami tried to make this a game, but there was just too many injuries to overcome this week.

The Dolphins did nothing with the ball on their next possession, picking up nine yards on second down on a pass from Thompson to Cedrick Wilson, but then losing five of them on a 4th-and-1 attempt. Miami turned over the ball on downs.

There is just nothing that is working now for the offense. The Jets are teeing off on the rookie quarterback and he is looking like a rookie quarterback.

Starting at the Dolphins’ 30-yard line, the Jets quickly moved down the field behind Breece Hall, with the drive culminating with a 15-yard end around from Braxton Berrios for the score. Jets 40-17.

Just salt in the wound right now.

Thompson picked up six yards on a pass to Gaskin on first down, then picked up 30 yards on a pass to tight end Mike Gesicki over the middle. After an incomplete pass in the endzone, Thompson threw back-to-ball 11-yard passes, one to Cedrick Wilson and one to Jaylen Waddle. After the 2-minute warning, an unnecessary roughness penalty on Wilson backed up Miami. Thompson then threw to Gaskin for 16 yards, but two incomplete passes turned the ball over to the Jets.

New York knelt to end the game.

Post Game Reactions

That was what happens when you have to play a seventh-round rookie at quarterback unexpectedly. The offense simply could not get anything going. It felt stagnant all day, then throw in the penalties and this was too much for the offense to overcome, no matter what the defense did.

The defense tried to keep Miami in it, but as soon as the Jets got the running game going, the Dolphins had no answer. This week, the defense has to address the issues with stopping the run or a 3-0 start to the season will very quickly be forgotten.

Miami next plays the Minnesota Vikings at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 16 at home.
