Perilous drain

Parel resident Jennifer Davar (pictured) who suffered lacerations to her liver and fractured three ribs after she fell into an open drain at Kalina, Santa Cruz, Bombay, "will resume work after five weeks,” she informs Parsiana on March 30, 2017. The authorities have now covered the drain, she adds. The Times of India of March 1, 2017 reported that the 42-year-old was visiting relatives for dinner with her husband Ruzbeh and "could not see the gaping drain that lined a housing society,” as there reportedly were no street lights on the stretch. Only a portion of the drain was visible, as the rest of it was covered with potted plants. The victim had demanded that "the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) cover all drains to avoid such grievous accidents in future, especially during rains,” Ruzbeh had been quoted, "(We) don’t expect this from the BMC.” A municipal corporation official had told the newspaper that "we keep inner roadside drains open as this makes the cleaning exercise easier.” ...
