Thanksgiving at the Towers

On the first day of the Kadmi calendrical year, a trip to the Doongerwadi is deemed mandatory by many Iranis

Some candles placed near the outer gate leading to the dakhma were valiantly flickering despite the incessant drizzle. In their proximity, some slit cucumbers served as holders for incense sticks. Alongside were laid select fruits, vegetables, flowers and small plastic bottles bearing milk, rose water and alcohol. Such offerings, predominantly by Iranis, are faithfully brought to the Doongerwadi every Kadmi New Year. Remembering with affection, gratitude and nostalgia the dear departed members of their family, it is their way of starting the year by visiting the final resting place of their loved ones. "It is a very touching sight to see......
