The recent shooting spree by a jawan from the paramilitary force for not being granted leave underlines the need for introspection. Leave to an individual from the armed forces, including the paramilitary forces posted on the border or in outlying areas, as also on board naval vessels, is more important than the quality of food they are given.
Whilst in command of a naval warship, a sailor was marched up to my desk as a "defaulter.” He had left the ship without leave. The sailor had taken short leave two months earlier but had once again requested a few days off......
