Mothers’ milk

As part of the World Breastfeeding Week that ended on August 7, 2017, the nurses of Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital prepared posters on the importance of breastfeeding and its nutritional values and emphasized various lactation methods to new mothers. "Breastfeeding within an hour of birth could prevent 20% of new born deaths… infants who are not breastfed are likely to die from pneumonia and diarrhoea,” according to an unnamed senior doctor from the Hospital, quoted in the Free Press Journal of August 9. The Hospital has a 150-bedded neonatal intensive care unit, which looks after 1,100 premature babies each year.  "There could no better gift…than breast feeding, wherein the child gets its nutrition as well as immunity,” says Dr Minnie Bodhanwalla, chief executive officer of the Hospital in an email to Parsiana on August 28. "For those mothers who cannot do so we have a milk bank, which serves underprivileged children, she adds, referring to their storage facility where pasteurized (human) milk is stored at 8° C for 100 days.        New mothers and a nurse at Wadia Hospital: Breastfeeding is important  ...
